Wondering what songs to play at your wedding? Having DJ'ed over a thousand weddings, DJ Robert of Wedding Pro DJ's has heard just about everything. Today he's offering his suggestions for each step of your wedding day. Like with anything related to your celebration, your music choices will be unique to you, but hopefully these picks are helpful to inspire your playlist!
What Are your Top Picks for Ceremony Music?
Pre-Ceremony Background Music
For about ten years I've really liked Vitamin String Quartet; they cover a variety of genres like rock, pop, and even hard rock. It's really well done! Guests often approach me to ask, "Is that Bruno Mar/The Beatles/AC/DC?!"
Processional Song Choice
I like the Piano Guys' version of "A Thousand Years." Personally, I like instrumental songs so vocals don't get in the way of the moment.
Recessional Song Choice
Some folks want classical music, but a lot of others want to "skip out" with something peppy. "Happy" by Pharrell is a good choice for that.
What Do you Recommend for Cocktail Hour Music?
Like the rest of the day, I go with the couple's favorites. Sometimes they ask me to "read the crowd" and choose myself. This can be a good time to cater to the more "mature" guests with some oldie favorites - many, many times I've had mini-dance floors going!
It's also a good time to play some classic slow songs for folks who may not partake in the "real" dancing later.
One time I played wedding for a British rock star, and the cocktail hour turned into an all-out dance party, with me reaching back into 'British Invasion' history. You never know!
What are Some of The Top Songs for Big Wedding Moments?
First Dance Song
That is so individual to each couple! If a couple is looking for a suggestion, I have offered "Crazy" by Patsy Cline.
I see a lot of couples dancing the first half of their song alone and then inviting the rest of the guests to join for the second half. That's a great option with "Crazy" ... because it's ageless, it gets a lot of teary eyes and people on the dance floor who never dance otherwise!
I also like Clint Black's "When I Said I Do".
Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Dances
Tim McGraw's "My Little Girl" is very popular for the father/daughter dance. For this year, I am going to guess it will be Alan Jackson's new song "You'll Always Be My Baby" - we will see! (To be fair, I've played everything from Bob Dylan to Bob Marley to Twiddle.)
For the mother/son dance, I can't remember playing the same song twice! This is usually a song that a son remembers that his mom loves. (Or he asks what song his mom likes...)
Three Songs To Get Everyone on The Dance Floor
1. The Beatles - "Twist and Shout"
2. Michael Jackson - "Billie Jean"
3. Justin Timberlake - "Can't Stop This Feeling"
Last Dance Song
Donna Summer's "Last Dance" is universal.
